Panel 1:   North America Oil & Gas Supply

This panel addresses the challenge of ensuring that energy demands are being satisfied in the best possible way. This includes the challenges of supply from various sources (oil, natural gas, coal, nuclear, hydro, other renewables) as well as transport of these supplies to where the energy is needed (via pipelines, transportation, transmission).  Over the next years, when the North America and global economies regain momentum we will have to deal again with the enormous challenge of building adequate energy supply and putting together the right mix of sources to match the growing energy demand of the whole world.

Panel 2:  Smart Electricity Grid in North America

A smart grid delivers electricity from suppliers to consumers using digital technology to save energy, reduce cost and increase reliability.  Smart grids can facilitate the increased use of renewable and alternate energy sources and also provide the infrastructure for innovative transportation alternatives such as plug-in hybrids.  This panel will review the status of smart grids in North America and the policy issues required to expedite the acceleration of smart grids.

Panel 4 – Energy and Trade in North America

Concerns about security of supply by consuming nations and security of demand by supplying nations are more pronounced than ever and threaten the international fabric of the globe.  Clearer international rules governing energy trade and investment are demanded. GATT and the WTO Agreement govern trans-border movement of energy in general but not in a coordinated manner, and leave many unanswered questions. New forms of energy such as biofuels and the issue of carbon footprints are conspicuously absent. The objective of the World Energy Council Task Force on Rules of the Energy Trade & Investment is to provide a systematic analysis of how WTO rules and regional trade agreements affect international energy trade and to make recommendations consistent with the interests of the energy industry for improving or clarifying those rules.  This panel will discuss current and potential barriers to energy trade in North America.

Moderator: Robert Schock, Director of Studies, World Energy Council
