Hon. Greg Melchin
Minister of Energy, Alberta
Greg Melchin was elected MLA for Calgary-North West on March 11, 1997 and was re-elected to serve his constituents for a third term in the Legislative Assembly on November 22, 2004. On November 25, Mr. Melchin was sworn in as Alberta's Minister of Energy.
In addition to his roles as MLA and Minister, Mr. Melchin also serves as Vice Chair to the Energy and Sustainable Development Standing Policy Committee and as a member of the Treasury Board. Previously, Mr. Melchin served as Minister of Revenue and vice chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Economic Development and Finance during the 25th Legislature.
Prior to that, Mr. Melchin served as:
- chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Finance and Intergovernmental Relations;
- a member of the Public Accounts Select Standing Committee;
- a member of the Legislative Review Committee;
- a member of the Montana/Alberta Boundary Advisory Committee; and
- a member of the Education Property Tax Review Committee.
From the time he was first elected until May 1999, Mr. Melchin served as the MLA representative to Treasury Board.
Mr. Melchin also has previously served as:
- chair of the Capital Investment Planning Committee;
- co-chair of the Committee of Deputy Ministers on Capital Planning;
- a member of the Premiers Infrastructure Task Force;
- a member of the Calgary Board of Education Review Team;
- a member of the Standing Policy Committee on Community Services;
- and a member of the Standing Policy Committee on Jobs and the Economy.
Greg Melchin was born in Raymond, Alberta on December 14, 1953. He has made northwest Calgary his home for most of his life and received his education in Calgary, graduating from James Fowler high school. He attended Brigham Young University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1977.
Mr. Melchin brings to the Legislature over 20 years of business and community experience. He articled for Peat Marwick Mitchell & Co. Chartered Accountants (Calgary) before receiving his designation as Chartered Accountant. His training and interest in business led to a subsequent career in financial and business administration.
Mr. Melchins accomplishments in business include:
- Vice-President of Finance for Torode Realty Ltd., a national commercial real estate agency and property management company (1989-1996);
- Chief Financial Officer for Adcorp Enterprises Ltd., offering video advertising to major companies and advertising agencies throughout Canada and the United States (1985-1988);
- Branch Controller for Bennett & White Western Ltd., a commercial general contractor and developer throughout Western Canada (1980-1984); and
- Partner in a small Alberta oil and gas company (1996-1997).
He has volunteered to many youth organizations, serving for over 15 years as a Scout leader and committee chairman with Boy Scouts of Canada, coaching basketball and assisting in softball and leadership training programs. Mr. Melchin has also volunteered many years of service in the community as a Bishop and leader with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Greg and his wife, Helen, have five children: Rachelle, Jenny, Ross, Brad and Karla.
