Pierre R. Alvarez

 

President
Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP)

 

Pierre Alvarez was appointed President of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) in June 1999. He is responsible for directing association activities on a diverse range of upstream petroleum industry priorities including industry operations, environment, health and safety, fiscal issues and regulatory matters in Canada and the United States. He leads a five-person executive team and CAPP staff located in Calgary and St. John’s.

 

Prior to joining CAPP, Mr. Alvarez resided in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories where he served as Chairman, President and CEO of the Northwest Territories Power Corporation from 1995 to 1999. From 1991 to 1995, he was Secretary to Cabinet and Deputy Minister to the Executive Council in the Government of Northwest Territories of former Premier Nellie Cournoyea, after having served two years as Deputy Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources. Before moving North, Mr. Alvarez worked in Ottawa as an energy consultant with one of Canada’s largest public policy consultancies and for Energy, Mines and Resources Canada.

 

A native of Trail, British Columbia, Canada, Mr. Alvarez holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of British Columbia and a Masters in Political Studies from Queen’s University.

 

Mr. Alvarez currently sits on the Board of Governors of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers and is Vice Chairman of the Revenue Transparency Forum at the 2005 World Petroleum Congress to be held in Johannesburg in 2005. He serves on the Management Advisory Committee of the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary, the Alberta Economic Development Authority and the Government of Canada’s Sectoral Advisory Group on International Trade. He also serves as a director on several educational, community and advisory boards.

 

The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) represents 150 companies that explore for, develop and produce natural gas, natural gas liquids, crude oil, oil sands, and elemental sulphur throughout Canada. CAPP member companies produce more than 98 per cent of Canada’s natural gas and crude oil. CAPP also has 125 associate members that provide a wide range of services that support the upstream crude oil and natural gas industry. Together, these members and associate members are an important part of a $75-billion-a-year national industry that affects the livelihoods of more than half a million Canadians.
