Energy Forum 2005

Press Releases from the Forum

May 29-31, 2005

“Investing in our Energy Future”

Over the next 20 years, the North American energy sector will require investment of over $3 trillion to meet growing demand and upgrade existing infrastructure.  This challenge crosses all sectors of the energy industry – electricity, oil and gas, coal, renewables and nuclear, and will also be felt in the areas of energy conservation and efficiency measures.

The objective of the 2005 Executive Energy Forum, sponsored by the Energy Council of Canada, is to ensure timely actions are taken to ensure a reliable and secure energy future for North America. Achieving this objective will mean advancing the dialogue between industry and the federal, provincial and territorial governments.

The 2005 Forum program was developed in conjunction with the recently formed Energy Dialogue Group (EDG). The EDG, a coalition of 18 associations, represents Canada’s energy value chain from upstream exploration and production through to end use energy efficiency.  The Group was formed to proactively address growing stresses on energy systems and the need for more systematic attention by governments to improve the policy and regulatory environment.

Together, the EDG and Canada’s federal/provincial/territorial Council of Energy Ministers have developed a diagnosis of the issues affecting energy in Canada and potential solutions.  The Forum will focus on these issues:

  • Investment;
  • Smart Regulation;
  • Human Resources/Skills;
  • Energy Efficiency;
  • Data and Information/ Communications and Public Engagement;
  • and Technology.

The Forum will provide the opportunity for significant dialogue as a prelude to the 2005 Council of Energy Ministers’ meeting in New Brunswick this September.

The 150 delegates to the 2005 Forum will be on an “invitation only” basis. This approach will ensure the participation of the key decision makers and a balanced group of stakeholders from all facets of the energy sector.  The highlight of the Forum will be a Round Table of Deputy Ministers and members of the EDG Steering Committee.

The Kananaskis, Alberta venue for the 2005 Forum is a superb setting at one of Canada’s most accessible, scenic and enjoyable recreational areas. It will provide a conducive atmosphere for dedicated discussion of these key energy issues.
