Annual Canadian Energy Industry Updates and Insights

Energy Trade in North America — Issues and Opportunities

February 5, 2018  |  Westin Hotel, Ottawa - Governor General II/III

The annual Canadian Energy Industry – Updates and Insights event has proven to be very popular with the Ottawa energy community. Attendees hear from industry and government energy leaders providing their updates and insights on important aspects of energy in Canada. The audience is typically a mix of representations of the diplomatic community, energy industry associations and energy companies, and representatives of governments, think tanks and academics.

The themes of the first three events have covered: the entire energy system (2015), issues related to energy supply and transportation infrastructure (2016), and energy end-use (2017). Attendance in February 2017 was 150+ which included 50 people from the diplomatic community in Ottawa.

2018 Theme

2018 Energy Industry: Updates and Insights - Energy Trade in North America is the theme selected for the 2018 event. Sessions will feature a combination of panel discussions and interviews, opening with a conversation between Kelly Craft, Ambassador of the United States to Canada, and David MacNaughton, Ambassador of Canada to the United States, moderated by our Chair, Colin Andersen.

There are many issues to cover under the broad theme of North American energy trade. Among the areas for the latest updates and insights from Canadian and US energy leaders are:

  • The latest developments in the Canada – US energy relationship, cross-border infrastructure, the impacts of US policy developments on producers and energy service companies;
  • The energy aspects of the re-negotiated NAFTA agreement, or implications for energy trade if the agreement is terminated;
  • Industry’s views on energy trade issues and opportunities;
  • The patterns of continental energy trade in oil, gas and electricity, given the continuing integration of energy markets, greater digitalization, and addressing climate change through providing clean supply for the United States;
  • Emerging issues from the bilateral and trilateral relationship, such as progress on the development of an energy strategy for North America; and,
  • A look ahead to possible developments in 2018.
